10-Day Tour Itinerary

DAY ONE

Our Adventure begins in Toulouse, where our coach whisks us off to the fairytale castle of Carcassonne. Across Time’s drawbridge, we sink into the past in this fortified medieval city. Wine and conversation flow during a decadent French dinner followed by a quiet stroll round the ramparts.

DAY TWO

We begin the day with a tour of the feudal fortress and basilica of Carcassonne, exploring the history of the Cathars and Albigensian Crusade. Settling into the slower pace of country life, we take the winding way to the 8th century Abbey of Saint Hilaire nestled in the heart of small-town Occitania. This evening we head on to Rennes-les-Bains where a five-course, home-cooked meal awaits us.

DAY THREE

Waking leisurely to a fresh breakfast, we make our way to the neighbouring town of Esperaza, where the local outdoor market has taken over the village. A staple of French life, le marché is an unmatched sensory spectacle! We delight in this delicious tradition as we troll the stalls in search of unique local goodies, souvenirs, and gifts. We spend the afternoon getting to know our home-away-from-home, Rennes-les-Bains, with its Roman foundations and numerous hot springs.

DAY FOUR

Up the hill to the mysterious hamlet of Rennes-le-Château where the story that inspired The Da Vinci Code comes to life. We visit the coded church, learn to follow the clues, and see for ourselves the secrets that have been hidden throughout the centuries.

DAY FIVE

Tracing the mystery through the landscape, we visit a natural grotto on a very specific spot and enjoy a lovely picnic near the ancient zero meridian. A leisurely afternoon at a local vineyard lets us taste the famous sparkling wine of this region, ancestor of Champagne and touted by the locals as far more delicious.

DAY SIX

A beautiful drive leads us to the idyllic castle of Puylaurens, one of the eagle’s nest Cathar Castles found throughout the Languedoc. On to the Gorges de Galamus, a peaceful hermitage nestled on sheer cliffs where the energies of the mountain sing through ancient grottos.

DAY SEVEN

A relaxing morning of free time in Rennes-les-Bains. Sit by the river with a book, enjoy the local hot springs, or take a hike through the surrounding countryside. Then we truly step into the secrets of the region to experience the magic of the ancestors for ourselves with a visit to a hidden hamlet marked by the ancient Celts. We finish our day at a delightful restaurant in the old Bishop’s Palace of Alet-les-Bains.

DAY EIGHT

Filling our water bottles at the mineral-rich spring of Campagne-les-Bains, we head off to the ancient halls of Puivert castle, once a gathering place for travelling Occitan minstrels. This afternoon we embark on a secret Adventure buried deep in this stunning countryside. Wandering into the forests of fée, the path before us is full of surprises.

DAY NINE

At the the Fountain of Fontestorbes, we discover a beautiful cave and waterfall with strange behaviours. After coffee or tea near the Fountain, we are off to Montségur, legendary home of the last Cathars. We enjoy the mysteries, history, and landscape before heading back for a gastronomical paradise of traditional French delights!

DAY TEN

Packing up to head home, we find ourselves enlivened and inspired by these days in the Languedoc. We wave farewell to our new friends and the stunning landscape of Old Occitania as our coach carries us back to present day and the airport in Toulouse.

HOW MANY PEOPLE USUALLY COME ON THE TOUR?

We offer a maximum of six spots per tour… that way our chauffeur can still get the coach down the backroads to our favorite spots, and we all fit around the dinner table for amazing discussion after days spent immersed in Mystery.

A small group also allows everyone the opportunity to explore their questions and interests. Want to practice French? Talk about the Templars?  Climb incredible mountains?  Relax and drink wine? Visit powerful sites? Journal and meditate?  Together, we co-create an amazing Adventure.  

WHAT LEVEL OF FITNESS IS REQUIRED?

No particular level of fitness is required, but daily walking throughout the tour is necessary, and lodging is accessible only by stairs. All hikes are optional, and in some cases alternative activities may be offered for those who choose not to hike. To participate in most hikes, adventurers must be able to traverse rugged terrain on an incline for at least 30 minutes.

whY IS THIS TOUR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN SOME OTHERS I HAVE SEEN?

The simple answer is that most tours do not include decadent meals and single-room accommodations. At Sacred Mystery Tours, we consistently choose the best experiences possible rather than cutting corners. Additionally, many tours with lower up-front costs expect you to pay for expenses once you arrive. Our Ancient Mystery Quest is very competitively priced for what’s included in the tour… because nearly everything is included in the tour!

We’ve found that to create the most powerful, immersive sacred experience, you need to be cared for deeply. In unfamiliar territory, the needs of the body must be prioritized—food should be accessible, delicious, and delightful…. and sleeping arrangements should to be personal, intimate, and easy. All this and more is included in the price of our Ancient Mystery Quest, so that once you arrive, there’s very little additional cost to you.



what will i need to pay for?

  • You are responsible for getting yourself to Toulouse, including airfare or other transportation required to meet the group on the first day of the tour. This may require lodging in or near Toulouse the night before and/or after the tour.

  • There will be one optional lunch at a lovely café that most Adventurers choose to purchase.

  • Tips for tour guides and hotel staff will be requested at the end of the tour.

  • Souvenirs and gifts for your friends and family who didn’t get to come on the Adventure of Lifetime!

  • Any extras or optional purchases not otherwise mentioned in the tour inclusions.

  • Adventures are limited to very small groups. We ask that all Adventurers please submit an Adventure Application.

  • France can sometimes be unpredictable.  Events and activities are subject to change based on availability and may be replaced by options of equal or greater value.  

  • Adventurers are responsible for their own travel insurance for the full inclusive dates of the Adventure. Proof of insurance is required. Sacred Mystery Tours will not be held liable for any illness or injury during the trip.

  • All prices are in US dollars. Payments must be received by due dates or your place on the tour cannot be guaranteed.

  • Refunds for any reason other than tour cancellation are only available if your place on the tour is filled.
